How an Unlikely Vegetable Can Be Used Topically for Common Skin Issues

You walk into a grocery store, and make your way to the vegetable aisle. You see some potatoes. I’m sure when you see them you either think of baking them, making mashed potatoes or slicing them up for French fries. I bet you have never thought of using them on your face, have you? Although commonly used as a food source, topical application of potato juice can improve your skin in various ways.

If you suffer from dark spots, dark under eye circles, or hyperpigmentation, a potato may be your best bet to naturally ridding yourself of these issues. It is said to be about 10 times as effective as aloe vera in brightening the skin. The vitamin B in potatoes helps to reduce the dark circles under the eyes. It is also a power anti-inflammatory agent that reduces puffiness under your eyes. Potatoes are a natural skin lightener that contains an enzyme called catecholase. Catecholase has brightening properties that reduce the appearance of acne spots, blemishes, and dark spots.

Looking to slow the hands of time? Potatoes contain vitamin C that rev up your collagen production, which is responsible for maintaining elasticity and firmness. They also contain vitamin A and magnesium that fight the free radicals that cause wrinkles. Fighting off those harmful toxins assist in smoothing fine lines, and keeping those wrinkles from getting in formation.

Potatoes contain potassium, which makes them hydrating and soothing. This makes them effective at treating sunburn and dry skin. The calcium found in potatoes heals dry skin, moisturizes it, and provides the top layer of skin with additional protection.

To get these benefits, cut a potato and just rub a slice on the affected area, let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse. You can also cut up a potato, toss it in a food processor, and then use a cloth to extract the juice. You can then add other ingredients tailored for your particular skin type or issue. For dry skin, adding a few drops of honey to the juice will give your skin the boost of moisture that it needs. For oily skin, adding a few drops of lemon juice will regulate your skin’s sebum production. Did you spot a new pimple forming? Apply cold potato juice mixed with nutmeg to it overnight.

There are tons of products on the market that combat all of the issues listed above. People shell out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on products that most times contain harsh chemicals that were never meant to be used on the skin. Not only are potatoes natural, they are extremely inexpensive. It’s a win-win. Why not enjoy beauty on a budget? You may be pleasantly surprised!
